Blokable at Phoenix Rising wins Gold Edison Award in Productivity Solutions
Blokable at Phoenix Rising was announced as the 2022 Gold Edison Award winner for Productivity Solutions in the Living & Working Environments category as part of the 35th annual Edison Awards. The Edison Awards™ is an annual competition honoring excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design, and innovation.
Our award-winning pilot project, Blokable at Phoenix Rising is an all-electric permanent housing community in Auburn, Washington, which Valley Cities Behavioral Health Care rents to residents who earn 30% to 50% of AMI.
Our Vertically Integrated Modular (VIM) model for housing development enabled us to deliver the project at less than half the Seattle area’s average cost per door, with each unit costing 60% less for heating and cooling. VIM is a new approach that integrates all the aspects of the housing development process — from design, planning, financing, and permitting, to almost-complete manufacturing, delivery, on-site construction, and ownership — into a single model that eliminates the middlemen and the one-off projects that make housing such a high-risk and costly endeavor.
Housing is the foundation for health, education, opportunity, and prosperity. By owning the development process from start to finish, our productivity solution outperforms the fragmented traditional development both in terms of investor returns and a quality housing product for renters. Moreover, NREL independently evaluated our model for the manufacturing and development of Net Zero housing in its report, Decarbonization During Predevelopment of Modular Building Solutions, and found that when scaled up, our development model can decrease total lifecycle GHG emissions by 60%, reduce construction material waste by 91%, and avoid the release of 2.4 million tons of CO2 by 2030.
